I was really determined on giving this one a chance because of the cast. Even pushed myself to sit through an hour of it. But couldn't stand a minute more. Seemed so overly pretentious like most of Malick's movies this past decade. I'm all for those artsy fartsy films with a hidden layer which requires multiple viewings or films that put you in a certain trance of weirdness and euphoria but this film was all over the place, its like Malick didn't know what direction to take.

It's the same pointless crap that Terrence Malick gave us in Knight of Cups and To the Wonder, which is a shame because he's still a great director.

The Film has a special cinematic language yes....that is weird yes. But I did not find it pretentious at all..it is very powerful and emotional without the use of cheap tricks. The directors use of Music is very characteristic of this, and is stated in the film by Iggy Pop. This style is so realistic and documentaristic that you feel your watching the personal lives of the actors. As for the story line that some film critics attacked as unclear and "self-interrupting", my impression is that the story is so simple and easy to see, inorder to allow the disconnection of the scenes, that help you be totaly absorbed by their magic in a "here and now" trippy experience and NOT be too distracted by the story. In other words this film manages to balance the verticle energy of the "now" with the horizontal energy of time and story, making the story stupid simple and the images magic and a bit disconnected. So if you're in a mood to try a deeper experience of life and a possitive outlook on life you will NOT BE DISSAPOINTED. Please ignore evil critics that knowingly lied to their readers (or else their totaly stupid) and shallow people entrenched in their ways.
